ringing in ears?

For years now, I have experienced occasional ringing in my ears. It is usually my left ear though. In the last year or so, it seems it's gotten worse. The ringing will come suddenly, and be very high pitched. And while the ringing is going on, i go almost completely deaf in that ear. Then after about 20 secs or so (sometimes longer), the ringing goes away, and my hearing comes back slowly.

Does anyone else ever experience this? Is this normal?

Get it checked out.  Could be any number of things.

I have it. Diagnosed with tinnitis. They never found a cause for me. I've had it since I was a kiddo.

Do you also experience vertigo or pressure in the ears? You may want to look into Meniere's Disease.

I've heard it has to do with your blood pressure (elevated). You should probably get it checked out to be on the safe side.

would I need to see an ENT? Or is there another kind of specialist?

i don't think it's related to my blood pressure, I get mine checked every single week (I have a nurse come to my home for my high risk pregnancy), and it's always on the low end... sometimes very low!

Probably, but I imagine you'll have to get a referal from your regular dr.
