The CDC did not give a definitive answer as to the cause of the rise in cases, nor what makes the new criteria they released the other day - 1/68 has autism now.

The more they know the more kids get tested and labeled?

I don't think more people have it I think more people are labeled.

They say more kids are diagnosed with it now, not that more kids have it now. Either way. That's some scary numbers though.

There aren't more kids with Autism necessarily. There are more kids who are tested and diagnoised.

How many of us know an Adult with traits that are clearly and definitively on the spectrum-and that Adult was never diagnoised?

Doesn't explain why certain geographic locations have an extreme number of autistic cases?

My husband. At 28 was diagnosed in January with aspergers. You would never know if you met him

because its easier for the mommys of today to get their child a label, this way everyone has to just understand and deal with the kids nasty behavior. This will also make mommy feel useful , oh and she will then tell everyone how hard it is to raise the child she chose to bring into this world, for the all the sympathy she can get.

While we don't know what causes autism, we do seem to know that there is a strong genetic component somewhere.  So doesn't it stand to reason that the number would increase over time?  More people with autism reproducing will create more and more people with autism?  There are other factors, too, like how Asperger's is no longer a separate classification, etc.

I don't know--just throwing out what popped into my head.
