It isnt likely but it happens.
I got pregnant with my son while I was on my period. It was the only time in 6 months that we had sex

People say it is impossible and that it just doesnt happen

You can get pregnant anytime you have sex.

Yes if you have an average cycle and nothing possibly goes wrong

It's true. People who have irregular periods or have done something like stop birth control halfway through a cycle can ovulate and have a period at the same time.

As you said OP, it's rare, but medically possible :)
