7k. We didn't really owe it, we had to pay it anyway.

What happened that you had to pay so much?

Only maybe 2K since I've been married but we pay quarterly payments & my husband has extra taken out of his checks. Once I owed over 4K when I was on my own.

The company that DH worked for was a publicly traded company that issued him stock options every year. He worked for them for 11 years at the time. They were bought out by Bain Capital and taken off the public market. They went private. When they did, they bought out everyone's stock. The IRS said we were missing a form when we filed our taxes. We counted the buy out as income but there was a form that was supposed to say how much we paid for the stock and how much it was sold for, to determine our gains. We explained to them that we didn't pay for the stock and they said it didn't matter. Dh went to his HR department and they said no such form exists and the IRS was mistaken. We spoke with other people in DH's position and no one had to file any special forms. The IRS basically told us to pay and then we could get a lawyer to try and get it back. No one would help us, so we had to pay it. It took us years.

Never owed federal.

This year, we owe around $500 to state and around $500 to local.
