Sudden knee pain in 12 yr old son

Hi all. My son woke up screaming and crying a little while ago because he got a really bad pain in his knee. He is saying it's the actual knee cap area. I was thinking a cramp or Charlie horse so I had him walking it out a little. After about 20 minutes the pain seemed to calm down a little just by judging his reaction to it. He isn't crying anymore but he's saying it still hurts. He just turned 12 yrs old. Has this happens to anyone's child/ self before?

Ok. I used to have problems with my knees when I played sports so it's the first thing that came to mind.
It may just be growing pains.

It can be growing pains, especially since it happened in the middle of the night. If he complains during the day..... have him seen.

* sigh*.......call his doctor tomorrow and they'll tell you whether you need to bring him in or not.

I would have it looked at just to make sure. My brother had a sudden onset of knee pain at the age of 13 and it ended up being osteomylitis. 3 surgeries and an awful recovery. He almost lost his leg.

My brother has knee problems, started at that age. Dr said it was because he grew too fast. I'd get him checked, db can't play sports because of it.
