My 5yo DD took my sisters sons Nintendo DS out of my purse and lost the stylus. If my sister pays for it the punishment for DD is that she works an afternoon for her aunt, if I pay for it she picks up one additional chore for me per day for 2-3 days to work it off.

All chores will be age-appropriate and not difficult. Just something in addition to her normal chores.

ETA:DD has ODD. punishments have to be more creative than a time out.

That said. Losing the stylus was not what she was punished for, it was the stealing and lying. Losing the stylus was a natural consequence of doing what she was told not to do and she was expected to make it right.

She babysat her sister while her aunt and I worked in the same room. She got paid for doing so, bought a pack to replace what she lost, apologized, and afterwards got to play a game on the DS with my nephew, that HE chose to let her play. When he asked her of she wanted to her first words were "let me ask my mommy" so I got the message through.

She's 5. I would just buy my nephew the $4 stylus and be done with it.

It's a stylus. Not that big of a deal.

I think you should punish her taking something without permission, rather than what she lost.

Maybe a time out for taking things without permission is all I would do.... she's only 5.

It wasn't hers to lose and she took it out of my purse and the baggie I had it in after I had specifically told her not to. She deserves to be, and WILL be disciplined for it.

So she should get away with doing exactly what I told her not to do and losing something that wasn't hers to lose? Jeez no wonder kids are brats these days.

I wouldn't make her do anything:
She is 5, things like that get lost. If it was that important the mom shouldn't send it over next time.
