shes worried

My niece is 10. She told me the other day she's worried her mom will die and if so she'll have to live with her dad. Her dad drives trucks long haul for a living and he's not the type to give it up for his kids. She's afraid he'll leave her living with his latest girlfriend (he has like 10 kids and 5 ex wives) who she barely knows. She asked me if she could live with me instead.
I assured her she doesn't need to worry her mom is healthy and shouldn't die anytime soon. She asked me if she could live with us if something happened and I told her while we'd be happy to have her (yes we've discussed this before) her dad loves her and he would legally have custody of her. She asked if there was a way to change that and I told her only if he signed his rights away or he's not capable of caring for her. I assured her we'll always be there for her no matter what. Even if by some slim chance something happened to her mom we would do everything we could to make sure she was cared for.
Did I do the right thing? Should I tell her mom about this conversation?

I'd mention it to her mom just to put everything on the table.
