When did having a kid with nothing wrong with them become uncool?
A kid (or an adult for that matter) can have a texture or two that they prefer to avoid with out having a sensory processing disorder.
Being scared of loud noises or stressed out by sudden changes in the plan are not enough to diagnose autism.
A kid being really picky about one or two things is not OCD.
A child being an ass hole because they are having a bad day, or because no one has ever disciplined them is nod ODD.
A child who gets a minor rash or a belly ache when they eat a particular food has a food sensitivity, not a serious food allergy.
Being loud and active is not ADHD.
A child who refuses to hug your 3rd cousin shes never met does not have RAD.
Your 18 month old not speaking in full sentences is not a speech delay.
All of these diagnoses exist and there are plenty of people who actually have the disorder, but seriously folks, there is no such thing as "A touch of ODD" or "a super mild case of SPD". Its okay for kids to have quirks and behaviors that don't have a diagnosis attached.
This has gotten tons of responses! Thanks for all your thoughts. I just want to clerify that I am:
1) Not calling ANYONE a bad parent.
2)Not advocating that the solution is to beat your children more and pay attention to their needs less.
3)NOT flaming parents of special needs kids. All these conditions, disorders and diagnoses exist and are real, but there are alot more kids being labeled with conditions they don't have, and that makes it harder for the kids who DO have special needs to get services and treatment.
