How bad did I mess up?

I'm making a German chocolate cake. I accidentally forgot to use the buttermilk and, not thinking, I used the evaporated milk that goes to the filling/topping instead. I didn't catch my mistake until I already put the cakes in the oven and noticed the unused buttermilk. So far, my cakes aren't firming in the center. Ugh.

The acid in the buttermilk creates lift when they combine with other ingredients.  So they may be flatter than usual.  The flavor won't be spot on, but they will still be edible.  I wouldn't throw them out and start fresh.

It won't have the sourness, so I'm not sure. I don't eat German chocolate cake
