If living in the states and visiting Niagra Falls... Do we 100% need our passports to pass over the line to Canada?

I went 7 years ago and they didn't care. Today I am hearing different.
ANYONE KNOW.

googled it...got a few different answers...

We went last year. Weren't asked for our passports on the way in but had to have them on the way back in to the US.

Yes, you need a passport now. They changed the law a few years ago.

Yes.  The laws changed just a few years ago.  You DO need a passport to enter Canada.

Yes. You either need a passport or an enhanced license. I live in Niagara Falls, NY and the border is right there
