First off, I'm not an idiot, but I am unsure of this.

my son just got the same sore beside his mouth as he had 2 months ago.  He puts his mouth on everything and I know some types of herpes is spread through saliva.

He has a doctor's appointment tommorrow, so I'll know for sure. I'm just curious for input.

Yes, possible.

Could also be a vitamin deficiency if he often has cracks on the corner of his mouth/lips.

They have over the counter medicine you can get for it at the pharmacy. You can also take a q-tip and dab a bit of oragel on it if you have any. Make sure not to touch it directly, or you risk contracting it yourself.

Cold sores are pretty common,  if they are bothering him get some of the over the counter meds,  I think it's called campho something or other.  It's over with the carmex and all of that in the pharmacy,  just make sure you get one for cold sores.
