I've been a debt collector for a couple months now. In the time that I've worked here I've realized that there are 3 basic reactions I get when I call people.

1) I just get hung up on.

2) I get screamed at/excuses for why they can't pay, then get hung up on.

Or 3) They actually care about their debt and their credit file so they either pay in full or make a suitable payment plan for their balance.

So, how do you react when a debt collector calls you?

Side note: For those of you who think otherwise, medical bills CAN report to your credit file.

Um, I don't have debt but I would pay immediately.

I let my kids answer. Last time my 5 year old said "hi daddy" and they hung up immediately

Yeah, I've come across a lot of people who are really embarrassed when I call them because they didn't realize they had something in collections. It's nothing to be embarrassed about, as long as it's paid immediately.

We don't get collection calls. We recently got new cell numbers though and the who used to have my number gets tons of collection calls. None of the people believe me when I say he no longer has that number.

So, you don't care about your credit score?

They don't call me but I'd be concerned about my debt and try to get it squared away.
