Why is it such a bad thing if spouses want to spoil each other?

This isn't a spin-off of anything but I'm just thinking back to a conversation I had with my sister. She doesn't understand why couples spoil each other. And not even necessarily talking about material things. She believes that spoiling your spouse will inevitably lead to relationship problems because you are setting the bar too high on what to expect in the marriage. She's certainly entitled to her opinion although I think it's an odd one lol.

I didn't know it was bad. We both do it with ease and it's been 16 years.

Well, I was telling her some of the things I do, like giving my husband a massage when he comes home, making him a special dinner for really no reason, and the little things he does for me.

We've spoiled each other from day 1..and weve been married 31 yrs with no marriage problems.

I do things for him...he does things for me. Give and take. Thats how we work. Sometimes it is material things, other times its gestures.

I don't think it's wrong either...My sister in law doesn't agree with me serving my husband...He doesn't expect it, I do it to show him my love...Heck he goes to work in the heat and cold, that's the least I can do...
