Is it OK for your 2 year old to have a toy gun?

I bought my daughter a really cute pirate kit that comes with an eye patch and old fashioned dueling pistol. She loves it, she plays with the pistol but not in the context of a gun.
Sometimes I wonder if people would think it's inappropriate for her to play with. We played with toy guns all the time when I was a kid, but it seems much more taboo now.

It's much better than giving a 2yr old a real gun ;)

I don't agree with it, but for VERY personal reasons- I'm a gun nut. There always are, and always WILL be guns in my house. The last thing I need is for my daughter to get the idea that a gun is a "toy," you know what I mean?

I would go so far as to say that it's never really a great idea, just because it fosters a comfort level that is a bit weird. If she sees a man with a gun, is she going to know to be scared, or is she going to assume it's a toy, you know?

But overall I think it's fine, I just wouldn't do it because the idea of my child playing with a real gun because they're too little to know the difference totally freaks me out. It's not like I have them out and about, but I want to be prepared at all times, and if there is some kind of mistake and she ends up near one, I want her to have a respect of them, and the knowledge that she is not to touch it.
