Pot smoking mama's

I have had chronic pain for years and years. I have tried pills when it gets bad but I hate taking them and don't want to deal with the side effects of them (both short and long term). I saw a pain management specialist the other day and he suggested me getting my medical marijuana card to help with my pain in a more natural way.
Well the dr office that helps you to get your card called me and it's $400, plus you have to go get your heart card from the dmv (not sure how much that costs). Then on top of that the mj isn't covered by insurance like other prescriptions so I will have to pay out of pocket for it.
Why? Why is it so expensive and why doesn't insurance cover it if it's medicinal? I just don't understand. How can people afford this?
I am a single mother to 3 kids and I am working my ass off to make ends meet already, I don't have the extra money for this. But if I don't have anything for pain management I am non functional by the end of the day when I get off work and that's when I get to spend time with my kids. By then I'm just in so much pain and I can not be the kind of mom I want to be. I am just so frustrated by all of this.
Has anyone else gone through this? Is there any way of getting some sort of "help" to be able to get a mj card and use mj medicinally?
I just want to not be in constant pain and be able to be a good mom and enjoy my kids again.

Um. Depending on how much you need/use, a little can go a long way.

I would most likely use it daily, at least for now until my physical therapy starts helping (fingers crossed!). Idk how much I would use or anything like that, I don't know much about it. I know I don't want to smoke it though, I will, most likely, ingest it through edibles.

I have chronic pain as well.  The question really is, what is getting rid of your pain worth to you?  Think of all the dumb shit you spend money on daily and I am sure you can find the money for something so important if you just cut those things out temporarily.  $400 for something that actually works long term?  That's a fucking bargain.

Why are you determined to go about obtaining it the legal way?

Well edibles are really potent, so it may go even further for you.

I wish I had the extra money, but I really don't. I do everything on my own, my kids' dad doesn't ever pay cs. I am taking him to court for it but that will take at least 6 months they say.
I really don't buy anything extra, like ever. I am a penny pincher.
We don't have cable/satellite, I don't own a computer, I don't have the internet, no home phone, no eating out, no buying new clothes or getting hair cuts (for myself, I do those things for my kids). The one and only "extra" thing I have is a cell phone which I feel is necessary. I even work at a daycare so I don't have to pay very much for child care while working.
I am looking for a 2nd job at nights but haven't had any luck yet. And honestly, idk how I'm going to function at another job at the end of the day.
The only assistance we get is Medicaid because my kids' dad won't put them on his insurance like he's supposed to. I could apply for more assistance (like daycare, food stamps, and energy assistance) and I know I'd qualify but I am doing my best to make it with no help. I would really prefer not to apply for govt assistance unless it is a last resort.

Because I don't want to wind up with a record, or in jail, or lose my job. I am even worried doing it the legal way because I know it's not federally legal and that kind of freaks me out.
Plus I can't afford it the illegal way either. I was hoping that by having a dr say I need it and using it medically it would be seen as any other prescription and covered with insurance.
