I can count on one hand the number of times I went to a restaurant in my 30 years...

So Im actually asking for help from the former waitresses

We are a family of 5 and going to a restaurant thats having a $1 day promotion. All meals are $1 when they are usually $5-10. 2 older children and a usually well behaved toddler. Since the drinks come with the meal and dh will probably order 1 beer for $5, how much should we tip?

20% of what the original cost wouldbe before the promotion. Thats just me personally.

Yep. But I'm guessing this is an 'extreme cheapskate' situation that the OP is in, so she might s*** herself at how much that would be!

You tip based on what the pre discount total would have been

This.  The servers should not get stiffed because there is a promo.

I would leave a normal tip your bill would probably be normally $50, so that's would be 20% tip, $10.

20% of what the bill would have been. Not 20% of the $1 promo.
