Yes this is a slight S/O but I see this theme often in this group. So to you, do you think that respect should be automatically given to those who are our "elders" or should respect be earned despite someone's age?

I always treat everyone with respect, even when they don't deserve it.

I don't believe respecting our elders means never disagreeing with them or politely pointing out when they are wrong.

Respect is earned. If you dont deserve my respect you will not get it.

Respect is earned.

Respect also doesn't equal laying down like a doormat and allowing the other person to dictate your life.

Yes, respect your elders. Always.
I have learned there is no sense in not showing rude elders some amount of respect because they are set in their ways and you being disrespectful will not change that, it will only make matters worse.

Idiots, racists, rapists.... They get old too.

Just because someone is older does not mean they know better, or that they should be listened to or respected.

Everyone gets manners. Respect, you earn.

While I believe in being nice and showing common courtesy to people, regardless of age, I do not feel as though elders automatically deserve respect. If they are mean or cruel, then I do not believe another person needs to put up with their behavior. Age does not equate to a free pass. However, with that being said and as I originally stated in my reply, I do believe, and teach my kids, that everyone should be treated nicely and with common courtesy until they act otherwise.

I try to treat everyone with respect.

But if you do something to slight me or my family...boom, respect lost.
