I have no problem with it.

When I went back to work when DS was a baby my mom offered to watch him if we paid for her to get a massage every week. A massage was a hell of a lot cheaper then full time child care, so we happily agreed

No. If it takes time away from your regular routine and adds expenses, like groceries and gas, then it's completely reasonable to be asked to be compensated.

My mom did. She is a bitch. Not just because of that. Lots of reasons. She is very selfish as well.

My self and my brother haven't spoken to her in 6 years

Only if it is a m-f all day deal. The occasional sit, no. My mom took my kids all morning while I set up my classroom, no charge. ;)

Not at all. The definition of grandma doesn't include "free babysitter."

I would never charge my kids to watch their kids.

That being said I don't have grand kids yet.

While I don't think it's outrageous to ask to be paid I know my parents never paid my grandma. She loved having me and wouldn't have taken it, in fact she usually asked if she could take me for the day. And my parents wouldn't take money to watch my kids if I shoved it in their hands. That's just my family though.

For occasional nights out, I don't think so. For full time child care while the parents are working, I don't see anything wrong with charging. A lot of expenses can be incurred & not all grandparents can afford that.
