I had to fire her because we saw her outside of the bar smoking cigarettes.....

We are a nicotine free workplace. We do test for it sometimes but not a crazy amount of testing. Well the other night a few of my coworkers and I went out to watch a live performance going on at a local bar. We got there and saw one of my other coworkers standing outside the bar smoking.

She tried to put the cigarette out really quick and hope I didnt notice but we all did.

I didnt say much right then and there but the next work day she had to take a drug test and sure enough she came up positive. I had to fire her right then and there.

I didnt really want to but policy is policy and I couldnt not do anything after a ton of coworkers saw her doing it.

ETA: I dont exactly like the policy but it IS policy. We work in the health care field. Every employee at the hospital signs a contract saying they will be nicotine free and drug free.

It's none of your business what an employee does on their free time.

Well policy is policy. We treat nicotine like any other drug.

Just curious. Why are you nicotine free? I understand not having it in the workplace, but I've never heard of it going that far.

It is company policy to not use nicotine or nicotine products. She went against policy
