Is it selfish for a mom to study abroad?

I am seriously considering applying for my college's study abroad program. They have different length terms, from 4 week to full semesters. My husband and kids are not supportive.

I did it
However I was a single parent and took DS with me for the term. He loved it.

That's why you finish college before the husband and kids come along.

I'm quite fine with the choices I made, thanks.

Yes it is selfish.  But that doesn't make it a bad choice.  Sometime we need to do things for ourselves.  However it should be decided between you and your DH.  You would need to figure out child care and what not, or maybe DH can go with and take leave or work from abroad.  There might be a reasonable way to make it work.

It depends on how your DH and kids feel about it. In your case, yes.

Because you know life always happens in that order.

My kids will be 9 and 13 when I do it so child care won't be an issue. DH wouldn't be able to go. To be honest, I wouldn't want him to lol.

Why can't you take the kids with you? I know it's work, but you would be caring for them here too.

Husband's go off our away for school and work all the time for many professions, why can't you? Because it is a stereotype that mom starts and dad is allowed to go.

Fuck that. If you need to do it for your degree, do it! If you were in military or if it was for your work you'd have to make it work.

There is Skype, face time, all sorts of ways to stay involved and connected.
