Our sports teams pray before each game and after. Each team has their own traditional ways of doing it. (Example, football players pray individually at the goal line before games and together after) all also end each prayer with the Lord's Prayer. It's all student led and no one is forced to participate. Music played before games, during timeouts, halftimes, ect. include some Christian music along with other types of music. Again this is all student led and decided.

Anyways, we were at a scrimmage last night and a mom of a boy who just moved her caused a huge scene over it all. She had to be escorted by security and everything. My brother is one of the captains of the team and he explained to the boy that as team they were still going to do these things but he didn't have to participate if he didn't want to. They boy is 16 years old, old enough to make the decision for himself. He said he likes participating in it because it was a team thing, that he would talk to his mom. She was just very anti Christian.

What are your thoughts on this? I have lived in this small southern town all my life and think the woman is nuts! I could see her being upset if her child was being forced or even if it was teacher/coach led instead of student. But I know my view on it is biased since this is my normal.

I don't see a problem with it. No one is being forced to participate and the kids are old enough to decide if they want to do it or not.

So students shouldn't be allowed to pray if they want?

I think that it is against separation of church and state.

It is also hard for someone of a different faith to opt out because then he wouldn't be considered a team player and made to feel like an outcast and could be ostracized by his team mates.

What is the point of it all?

If the students choose to, then it is fine. It would be different if the administration forced it.
