My son called a girl a lesbian

I was picking up my son from school on Monday and got a mom running up to me with her daughter who is in my son's class (and he has always been friendly with).  During lunch another boy told him to call this girl and another girl lesbians :/   I was horrified. I made him apologize and explained to the mom that he doesn't even know what that meant and I will talk to him about it.  She accepted the apology thankfully.

When we got home, I had "the talk" with him and explained about different relationships people have and he truly felt bad for hurting the girls feelings. My sister was in a lesbian relationship, and, now he understands that they weren't just sisters (what he thought they were, I never explained to him before).  I also made him write both girls an apology letter....

I thought I had a couple more years left to have that conversation :/

I had to explain why a man was wearing a dress last week. I feel your pain and I think you handled it well.

I could see the look of anger fade from the mother's face when I explained he didn't understand what it meant and thankful she accepted his apology. I was so embarrassed.

Your son is nine and didn't know what a lesbian was? It sounds like now is the perfect time, thats not something to be hidden away until they are teenagers.
