Is it wrong to be on a cell phone call while checking out items at a store?

Any store, grocery, clothing etc.

Do you think it's rude to be on a phone call while the associate is ringing you up? Why or why not?

I would say preferably to stay off the phone while being checked out. But if you must take the call, at least be attentative to the cashier in case he/she needs to inquire about something.

It's more foolish than anything else.  The cashier can make a mistake in their favor and you wouldn't even know it.

Yes. Face to face should be priority. You don't have to go to the checkout if your busy on the phone. Cashiers are people too.

I don't think its rude. All they're doing is ringing up stuff. It's not like there's an in-depth conversation taking place.

If I am on an important phone call. If it's not then I'll tell the person t OK hold on a second or I'll tell them I'll call them back.

Yes it is rude. If the checker needs to speak to you, they shouldn't have to wait while you gab. It it also indicating that what they are doing is of little consequence to you, and it is wrong to treat people like that.
