Her dog didn't like him.  She would growl, lunge and nip at him when he came in and then would hide under the bed while he was there.

I'll tell you my opinion as soon as I see some of yours.  :)

Reasonable?

or

Whacko?

It depends on several things.... was the dog like this with pretty much everyone or just the boyfriend? Was the relationship of a long-standing nature, or was this just a guy she had been dating for a few months?

My dog hates all men.  So no...I would have had the guy come over with tons of food treats for the dog...she would have come around and grown to like him (it is how we got my dog to be around my male friends and male family members....

Absolutely. Something was off with him and likely dangerous.

Dogs are a good judge of character. If he was like that towards him, there is a reason for it.

Is the dog like that with all new people or men? Dogs are supposedly good judges of characters, so if that isn't normally behavior, I'd wonder what he was picking up on.

Depends on the dog. My dog equally hates all people who aren't me and my son. The dog I had growing up loved everyone and if she growled at you, something was really off.

While I often think dogs are a good judge of people, etc, I also think it depends on the dog. A dog might not be fond of strangers, dislike men, dislike the smell of another animal on someone's clothes, etc, etc. My old neighbor had a dog that absolutely hated my husband. No idea why. Dogs usually LOVE him. He's very good with animals. My own dog prefers him to me, actually. But this dog could not stand him.

I think you need one more answer. "Depends on how the guy responds to the dog" or something like that.
