I don't know anything about trade schools but a MacBook is really important for most colleges. Pens and a notebook? Maybe a lab book? A tablet for ebooks?

I'm in a community college for baking and pastry arts. The only thing I've really needed is my computer, paper, pens, pencils, a printer and paper, notecards, a backpack, headphones/earbuds, and several three ring binders. Those are for my general educaiton courses. Once I begin the actual program, I will need program specific materials such as chef uniform, non slip shoes, supply and tool set, etc. It depends on what your trade is.

It really depends on the program and the college.

Here the english department has a no electronics rule. So absolutely no laptops.

Some individual teachers have the rule as well.

Some programs you don't need a ton of notes either

Pen and paper. Some profs do not allow laptops in class

I'll add, pen/pencil and paper has always been best for me as far as note taking. If it's something there is ONLY notes written, then I suppose a computer would be fine, but a lot of the time you need to draw diagrams, shapes, charts, graphs, etc. That you can't easily do on a computer.

Some trade school issue IPads or chrome books with the tuition fees.
