hsa and taxes

I had no idea it would make that big of a difference, fully funding an hsa! Dh started an hsa plan July 1st and not knowing much about it we had it set to do $100/ check (every 2 weeks). Dh had knee surgery in September and we've been struggling to pay the almost $5k after insurance. Went to tax guy today and he said if we take our return and fully fund our hsa (we would have to add about $5k), we can use that to pay the balance of the surgery bills and then have extra for when baby comes in june. The kicker is if we fund it by April 15, we'll receive an extra $976 back. I'm do glad I was able to chat with him about it! Between baby coming and then our chiropractor care, we should come out about even if we fully fund the hsa. Might have to adjust how much dh puts in there too!
No real point to the post other than hoping it may help someone else who may not fully understand hsa's.
