Speech therapy

My daughter had her 18 month doctor appointment today and the doctor put in a referral for speech.
She says 5-6 words and does not say any sentences, the doctor said by this age she should say at least 10 words and say small sentences like hi mama, eat banana, drink milk, etc.
This has me a little worried now.
Have any of you had a child in speech therapy?

My dd started speech thrpugh early intervention. They came to our house and played games with her it was cute. She was discharged from speech therapy around 3 1/2. It did wonders for her.

Yes and I wish I had gone when the doctor told me to instead of waiting it out like everyone said.

I had a speech therapist for my youngest from birth to just before 3 years old.  She was also his feeding specialist, thats why I had her for him so young.  They do help.

Yes, she comes to me when I call her, she gets things like toys and books when I ask her to, etc.

I know my mom will say she's fine and to wait, but I'm definitely going to take her

We have EI services, but not speech.  A developmental specialist plays games with her, focusing on visual tasks and attention, twice a month.  SHe used to have OT, too, but she's since been discharged from OT.

I wish I had done it sooner but the drs keep saying to wait it out. He did a private company starting at 4 and then does it now threw the school he goes to. He is 7 now and I'm not sure if he will need it next school year or not. Speech therapy will only help. There is no down side except time.
