I think you're confused. A vowel renewal only occurs during Scrabble or Wheel of Fortune.

They're a reaffirmation of your commitment, and a celebration of how long you've been together.

IMO when a couple does this there is some serious issues in their marriage and they are making a last ditch attempt at publicly proving that there aren't serious issues in their marriage.

Vowels? Lol.
Vows don't expire, I guess people feel like they need to renew their relationship, hence, renewal.

We were married in a courthouse when I was 19 & pregnant. 5 yrs later, we got religious, he got baptised, I got confirmed, and we renewed our vows with some family there at a sunrise Catholic Easter mass. It was nice :)
