Ha! He clearly doesn't have any idea how ice works.

They also regulate the flow so it only runs at 50% capacity anyway.

When we were kids we used to love walking out onto the lake when it froze over. I can't even think about how dangerous that was now. But it was amazing, like walking on a different planet.

Actually, it won't overflow. Teh lakes will be fine. But Niagara has a shutoff system. They use it whenever some schmuck decides to try to go over the falls in whatever contraption they've devised. tehy'll just shut the flow way down and let the run off control itself, basically.

There was a "way" my dad used to figure out if it was safe or not... 

I'm pretty sure he just guessed, but on Lake Superior, it was almost always a given that that shit was frozen at least 6 inches down, as you were within 50 feet of the shore.

How cold was it? Ours is normally -40. Lately it's been closer to -10 or even up to +30 some days
