Do people really think this. not all sahm are able to sit home all day playing with their children and cleaning and cooking. Some have huge responsibilities outside the home and not everyone lives in an areas where public transportation is available. Some live in the country , some live in small towns.

Same with a cell phone. Some of those responsibilities including needing communication and not just when you at the house. In fact, I don't know anyone who even has a landline. My 65 year old neighbor doesn't has a cell instead.

This isn't the 70's or 80's anymore. You can't depend on your neighbors to be there when needed anymore.

I agree with the above posters. I'll also add that I think it is even more important to have both in case of a power outage or emergency. We do have a landline but if the power goes out we have a backup.

That's dumb, but the good thing is their opinion doesn't matter.

I've heard some rather idiotic ideas about SAHMs around here, but not that one yet.

No one thinks this in general. The fact of the matter is that if you can't afford your bills, something has to be cut from the budget. You can survive without a cell phone, but it isn't reasonable to think that you could live without electricity or water.
