Are you supposed to rinse pasta and rice after cooking?

Pasta...sometimes. Rice..no. (imo)

ETA

I only rinse pasta if I'm not going to add a sauce to it. I rinse it when I make cold pasta salads too.

The purpose of rinsing pasta is to cool it down rapidly...this should only be done when using it in a cold dish.

It also washes away starches in those items. I'm a former Chef and I rarely ever rinse my pasta and never my rice after cooking.

Rinse pasta if you need to stop the heat. I don't rinse rice.

I do if the pasta is really sticky but never rinse rice. I dump the pasta in cold water to stop it cooking. Don't put oil in the water when cooking or the sauce will not stick.
