Why do people become wonderful upon death?

A relative of mine married a decent lady who's now 28. Come to find out, her mom treated her and her siblings horribly. Abusive. Lock the in the bedroom while she did drugs and had sex with strangers. When the girls were 14 or so, she let them participate. She beat the girls. They didn't always have food. They wore dirty clothes. She punched the girls if they didn't follow directions. Didn't go to the doctor or dentist. It goes on and on.

Her mom passed about 6 weeks ago. Now the dd and 2 sisters are posting on fb 4 and more times a day, saying how marvelous their mom was, how she was their rock. They got tattoos, t-shirts, and signs memorializing their awesome mom.

I just wanna scream at them.

What is the purpose behind all the lying?

They rather remember the mom they wanted vs what they actually got.
