Calling all English major, expert and English police...come see if this is correct

So recently had to take a test for a temp agency and one question was: is the following sentence correct?

"The colors of the leaves are; brown, yellow and orange".

Well I marked no. But later when I discussed it with my husband, he said it is correct. I don't think the semicolon can be put there. Maybe a regular colon, but I was taught semicolon are for combining two clauses.

What do you think?

(There were math questions too,and I got 44/47, but it doesn't show which ones are wrong. I'll ask for a copy when they set an appointment for interview.)

No punctuation should be used after the word "are".

You can only use a semicolon if a full and related sentence follows it.
