Book club recommendations

I'm in a book club, we just started, and it's going to be my turn to pick our book soon. The first book we read was Unbroken, which is possibly the worst book I've ever read. I want to pick something that people will enjoy and will get us talking, but because a lot of the women in our group are religious military wives I'm thinking we'll be doing a lot of war/religious books. I don't necessarily need to shock their systems but I'd like my pick to be something outside of those themes.

Any ideas? Our only requirements are that it needs to be available from the library and that it not be part of a series. Recommendations?

I did enjoy them :)

Unfortunately we can't use them because of the rule about no books from a series. Thanks though.

Everything I Never Told You was a great and thought-provoking novel. We stopped reading in my boook club...just heavy drinking!

"The Help" and "The Hours" are two I'd recommend

ETA---just a forewarning. I am currently reading The Hours by Michael Cunningham and it really is a great book so far but...it starts out with the suicide of one of the primary characters.

Go on Target's website and search under books for Club Picks, they have a lot of books to choose from.

The House We Grew Up In was pretty good, lots of interesting points to talk about.

The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was great too. The copy I have had questions at the back for book clubs.
