How do you allow your bank account to be overdrawn by $1000!

DH's ex wife is calling begging us for money for groceries because her bank account is overdrawn by a grand. What the actual fuck? How do you allow yourself to get into that big of a hole?

Edit: when she runs out of money she uses the overdraft protection as a temporary loan. She did that while she was married to Dh and hasn't changed her behavior when it comes to money.

Between child support and her job she brings in about 8000 a month so she has money she is just incredibly irresponsible when it comes to money. Again she's been like that her entire life, she has no concept of saving money and when an emergency comes up she relies on her parents to help her pay for it.

Dh offered to let the kids stay with us until she got paid or her child support came in but she declined, her father had given her money to buy groceries so Dh isn't worried about the kids going hungry.

What bank allows you to do that unless you have a line of credit?

Wow. I have overdraft protection for $500. However I've only had maybe -$50 at the most.

I don't know, but if I did buy groceries it would only be things the kids would eat.
