People do hateful things all the time in the name of religion. What is happening in North Carolina and Mississippi is a perfect example.
People use religion to justify their bigotry.

I am not educated well on this. I could come up with obvious religious conflicts like anyone else but I don't know the ins and outs of every religious incident.

I think most devout religious people feel compelled to protect themselves and convert others. This is dangerous. I also think religion will always exist. Humans need something to explain why, what happens next and how did we get here? Most people feel some spiritual connection to eachother, nature, etc and religion meets that need.

Life is suffering.

Suffering is caused by craving, not Christianity.

Suffering can be stopped and happiness attained by ending craving.

We end craving through the Eightfold Path.

This is the Buddhist response to suffering.

Though it wasn't just the Christian religion that suppressed scientific thinking:

No. People have their own motivation for war greed and stupid laws. They simply blame their religion when it's really their own instinctive desire to be powerful.
