Can you train yourself?

I am not a go-getter, not motivated to do even things that I really want to do. But there are some things I need to do, like portion control, better food choices, and studying for a test.
I'm thinking about trying to snap a rubber band on my wrist when I think about eating bad food, but I wonder if that stuff really works or if it takes years of conditioning in order for that to work? I know there are people who have no problem with self discipline and just naturally are able to achieve or at least work towards whatever goals they want. This post is not for you. I want to know what the people who are like me have done to teach themselves to be achievers.
