It's not irrational to expect it, but when it doesn't happen like that, then the word of the day is acceptance, right?

I'd expect that she would but if for some reason my son's gf wasn't with her mother, she'd be welcome to join us.

While it's not irrational, perhaps she looks more to you as a mother than her own mother. In that case, I'd let her enjoy the day with you. :)

She should be with her mom but at 14, she's prob feeling like she can't be away from your son.

I don't think it's unreasonable/irrational to expect your son to spend time with you on Mother's Day. If you want that to be without significant others, that's fine. But what she does with her own mom is none if your business.
