Polynesian resort bungalows at Disney is the best place to stay. :)

As for things to do, it depends what route you're taking.

Fun spot in old Town is great, the Premium outlets on I-4, the Nike factory outlet on 192, the loop in hunters creek all great places to shop. As for staying, the Polynesian is beautiful as well as the Marriott grand vista

what are your plans for Orlando?  I usually plan my hotels based on what attractions we plan to visit.  When we go to Sea World/Aquatica we stay at the Residence Inn Seaworld.  We are going to Universal next year and plan to stay at one of the on-site hotels.  I usually shoot to stay as close as possible to wherever we plan to visit.

I'm going to Orlando this summer. We're staying at Vistana Villas.

I went last weekend for 2 days. I live in Florida so it's not much a drive for me. I enjoyed Hard Rock Cafe at Universal. There is also The Orlando Eye, which is a new ferris-wheel type thing. Very cool. Look it up

If you're not staying on Disney property, Orlando is terrible. An overpriced ghetto.
Stay as close to the resorts as you can.
