Both. My daughter has a knock out professional wardrobe. She has Calvin Klein dresses galore amidst a host of other brands. But she will wear anything that looks great on her--- so if she sees a top or pants that are not brand name-- she will still wear them.

Depends. One kid needs special shoes, so they are usually a name brand of sorts. I buy my daughter her basic shoes but she buys her own name brand stuff when something strikes her fancy. The youngest gets cheap shoes.
I don't buy name brand clothing for anyone. Again, sometimes they will for themselves if they find something they like but they don't "require" it just because it is a certain brand. I don't think my children realize people care.

I let my kids pick our and wear whatever they want as long as it is age/weather appropriate. Hell, I'm not even sure what nme brand for kids is these days? I have a 12 year old that pairs Miss Me jeans (name brand, right???) With target store tank tops (I'm assuming generic??) I don't think anyone ever cares.
