Eight years ago, dh had lap band surgery. It was great for the first year. He lost over 100 lbs. Then the nausea and vomiting started. He slowly lost the ability to eat more than liquids. Any food he tried to eat got stuck and he vomitted it back up.

Two years the acid reflux began eroding his esophagus. He was diagnosed with chronic aspiration pneumonia. X-rays showed infiltrations in his lungs. The malnutrition suppressed his immune system, wounds didn't heal properly, and his overall health was deteriorating.

Several specialists advised him to have the lap band removed but insurance wouldn't cover it until his esophagus RUPTURED, which is stupid, because then he'd be dead.

This last week, it finally got bad enough that insurance would finally agree to cover it, but dh had not met the deductable and we didn't have $5,000 to cover the upfront costs. Through the thoughtfulness of anonymous donors and his boss, we received several checks for over that amount.

Thursday, my husband had that evil piece of crap removed from his body! I cannot even tell you how happy I am to have my dh back. As soon as he came out of anesthesia, the first thing he said was, "there's no more pressure, my chest doesn't hurt". The surgeon had to cut it out of the scar tissue and did some reconstruction on his esophagus because it was twice the size it should be .

Today my dh was feeling concerned about an unusual pain he was having. We figured out it was an actual hunger pain, he'd forgotten what that felt like. He ate actual food for the first time in 8 years and it stayed down and didn't cause him to drown in his own acid. I cannot express how miraculous this is to us. Already his color looks better and he's pain free for the first time in so long.

Btw, every doctor we've seen for this has expressed disgust at how many of these things they've had to remove. If you're thinking about doing this, don't. It's not worth it.

I have heard really bad things with the lap band. I am considering the gastric sleeve (which has a way less percentage of complications ). I am so happy your dh is recovering and is doing much better. Hope it continues.

People have asked me if I have considered doing this because I'm so heavy and I always say no. I think those surgeries are dangerous and your DH's story is exactly why.

Besides that, I don't overeat, except maybe on Thankgiving or Xmas. I'm not typical of an obese person though.

Not directly, but these results could mean more happy endings for both of us. Lol. Read it and you'll understand what that means. But thanks for asking that, because it didn't occur to me that this means hubby's sex drive will come back!! Yippee!

Her hubby got the lap band, it made it so he couldn't eat, then got severe complications. He finally experienced hunger pains for the first time in several years. He got the band removed and can eat now.

My kids grandfather had that done about 8-9 years ago and it caused so many problems with him as well.

He ended up developing so many health issues that he had never had before. Thankfully, over the last year or so he's started gaining a little weight back and he's starting to feel and look a lot better.

Glad your DH got it removed and hope he continues to feel better.
