DD will be attending kindergarten next year. I have two older children who will go to the same school. I am debating whether to allow tthe three of them to walk to school alone. They will be 5, 8, and 11. Ds (currently 10) walks to school with friends now. DD (currently 7) isn't allowed to because I have not talked with her dad (my ex) about it yet. He is very conservative about these things but I was thinking of bringing it up to him this summer.

It depends on the maturity of the 11 year old and if the 5 year old will listen to the older kids when it comes to safety issues such as crossing streets and not going in the road.

If they are all walking together and the 11 yo is a responsible kid I would.

The 5 year old is very safety conscious and will definitely listen to the 11 year old, who has his very immature times, but it working hard to change.

Yes, assuming you can answer all the typical questions the right way...safe neighborhood, 11 yo will hold 5 yo's hand while crossing the street, well behaved kids, not too far, etc.

I'm willing to assume you have the right answers to those, so yes.

I wouldn't be comfortable with an 11 year old being responsible for a 5 year old.  If it were just the 11 and 8 year olds, I don't see an issue.

5 is too young and unpredictable and that's too much responsibility for the oldest. If something were to happen..oh my.

I would not. I would let the 8 and 11 yr old respectively walk alone..but a 5 yr old with them..NOPE. My 6 yr old was a runner. No way an 11 or 8 yr old would've been able to keep him from running into the street.

I would, but our school district has a rule that a kindergartener must be escorted onto or off of the bus by an adult, or dropped off and picked up by an adult or approved person such as a daycare.

They may not walk to school with a sibling or other student, or ride their bikes to school.

Yep. My son was responsible enough at 11 to walk with a 5 year old. He walked with his friend and his friends' 5 year old sister when he was that age.
