Pay for lunch or no lunch?

I am very good friend with my brother-in-law's boyfriend we got along great he is having some medical issues right now and is out of work so they are relying on my brother-in-law's income to live on. In my house we are one income also but my husband and I have two kids. I like going out to lunch with him because it gives me a chance just to vent and be with a friend but every time we go I have to pay now since he's been sick and I'm starting to resent it. him and my brother-in-law go out of town to antique shows and do things on the weekend but I can't figure out why we can't take turns buying lunch and he just says that they can't afford it I want to go to lunch with him but I also don't want to start hitting him and it's really not in my budget either.
I'm not sure what to do he keeps texting me saying that he's bored and I've got the money he's got the time LOL kind of thing so what do I do?

Take turns having each other over for lunch at your homes. Isn't it more about the company then the lunch ? Surely you both can afford to make sandwiches or salads for each other now and then.

I wouldn't pay anymore. I'd just blow him off.

Just simply tell your waitress to split the bill before you order.
