Ten years ago, when we first moved here, we rented a three bed/2.5 bath townhome for $1000.

A place that size is going for at least $2500 these days. I'm pretty sure the average income didn't double, because most renters leave town to find an affordable place to live now. It's outrageous.

The Midwest, medium sized town. Job market is decent, but fewer opportunities than in larger cities or the coast. Average income is about $40,000- $50,000 per year. we pay considerably less than $1,000 for a two bedroom, two bathroom duplex.

The average rent in my area for two bedrooms is about $650, for 4 bedrooms is around $900. Our mortgage for a 3 bedroom house is $672 and includes property taxes and insurance. We live in Ohio.
