I am trying to help my daughter with her summer math packet and for some reason cannot remember how to do these problems. The internet is not helping at all, lol. Please, if you excel at math, explain to me how to get these answers. I really need you to dumb it down for me. Thank you!

Simplify each expression:

17+(+14)

-14-17

-14+14

16(-4)

Looks like simple math to me:

17+14=31

-14-17= -31

-14+14= 0

16 times negative 4= -64

Same signs means do what it says : 17 plus 14 is 31

negative 14 plus negative 17 is negative 31

then opposite signs cancel negative 14 plus positive 14 is zero

then parenthesis is multiplication. 16 times neg 4 is -64.

Hope this helps to jog your memory. Ask specific questions if you have them.

The first one would be just 17 + 14

The second one you can't really simplify.  It's -14-17.

The third one would be 14-14.  You can just flip flop the two numbers.

The last one, is that 16 *times* -4?  Because usually a number next to the parentheses means multiplying by what's in the parentheses.  So it would be 16 * -4.

1) is basic addition, 17 + 14

2) If you borrow $14 on monday,  then borrow $17 on tuesday how much money do you have. (negative is less than zero)

3) You are $14 in debt, and find $14 in the wash- how much money do you have if you pay what you owe.

4)You buy $4 16 times from the same friend, how much money do you have. (answer us negative to show you have less than zero due to the amount that you owe.)

Did she say she was doing it for her dd? No.

I have looked up extra help trying to figure out my kids math, or a good way to explain it to them. No shame in that at all.

I was going to post the same thing. Khan academy is awesome!  I have used them all during college.  You tube in general is great for tutorials.  There is also photomath.  Its an app you can download and you can take a picture on your phone and it will work out the problema nd give you a step by step.
