Other than sight seeing on the Mall, nothing is free here.

When I was a teen I was upset when my family bypassed DC on a road trip. The number one thing I wanted to see at that age was the library of congress. I still haven't made it to DC. I had a trip planned last summer but broke my leg. My number one things now are several Smithsonian museums. I would advise you to make a list of the Smithsonian's you most want to see. The newest one, the Museum of African American History, takes some advance notice to get a ticket to.

I know but which ones are best? We will only be there for a day and half

They started charging admission to the museums, national zoo, etc? That was all free when we lived there...
