Dh and I are going to dinner and to see IT so I asked MIL what they wanted for dinner so I could go pick it up. My oldest son asked for nachos. So I had him make the list. He had to check in the house to see what we needed. Then he had to go to the store with me and he had to do the shopping. We talked about budgets and wants and needs.

I gave him a budget and helped him stay in but he did ended up going over (by 10 bucks). So we talked about how since he's needs went over budget then for that week he doesn't get his wants. Needs are more important then his wants. He had fun and said he wants to do it again. And everyone that heard us talking thought it was great what I was doing.

He's 11 but he's asked us if when he's older if he brother could live with him and he take care of him. So I feel this is something he's gonna need to know how to do. Even if his brother doesn't live with him he still needs to know this cause I won't always be around.

My mom was just starting to teach me all this stuff when she passed so I want to make sure he knows what to do and how to work on a budget.

My kids have been learning how to shop and budget since they were 7.

They also know nachos aren't dinner.

How did he go over by $10? It doesn't cost much to buy stuff for nachos.

Yes. My kids have been responsible for groceries/meals at different times in our lives. Boy Scouts also teaches this when the boys shop for their campouts. My son is awesome at stretching a dollar!!
