Am I required to invite everyone?

DS just entered 1st grade this year and made new friends. This is his first year in school so it's all new to us. His birthday is also coming up and we want to have a party but are we required to invite his entire class? Do you also invite the teacher? We don't mind hosting a decent party but I don't want all 18+  kids and their siblings there but at the same time, I don't know school invite etiquette. Won't other kids have hurt feelings if they don't get invited?

Yes, there is a school rule that we can't pass out invites during class/at school.

Yes, invite the whole class. Don't invite the teacher.

If you send the invites to school you must invite the whole class.

Otherwise mail or email them to the specific kids you want to invite.

The whole class wouldn't come anyways. You would be lucky to get half.

Yeah out of 20 kids you might get 6 that show up.

Then pass out the invites after school to the children that you do want to invite.

Just invite your kid's friends.   A party with eighteen 7 year-olds can be overwhelming to the host and the birthday boy.  I let my daughter invite the number of her age plus 1.  It kept the guest list at a manageable level.  Hand out the invitations at dismissal or get the addresses from the school.  If the school is on the ball, then there is a student directory.
