Would you adopt a pit bull as a pet?

Our local animal shelter has three pitbulls for adoption.

Two look full blooded, the other looks mixed.

Would you adopt a pit bull? Kind of makes me nervous.

It depends on the individual's temperment. Why does the breed make you nervous?

Totally depends on the exact dog in question. I have two kids and a yapper dog, it would have to be the right fit

How old? How's their temperament? Where did they come from?

So many factors when adopting any dog so it would be a maybe.

My brother had a pitt/lab mix and she was the world's greatest dog. Such a sweet heart.

No, I wouldn't. You see it all the time, people sugar coating pit bulls with lines like "They're the perfect family dog!" "Small dogs like dachshunds and chihuahuas are more aggressive/dangerous", etc.

This is contributing to a terrible reputation because the average family does not need a pit bull. Despite what people say, they were bred for bull and bear baiting, a blood sport, that is the truth. Unlike some of the other common breeds known for dog attacks like german shepherds, rottweilers, etc. they were bred with completely different intentions. A rottweiler was not bred to kill, it has the strength to, but it was meant to herd cattle and listen to commands. Pits should never be around children.

I would only adopt a pitbull puppy so I know how it is raised.  It's not worth the risk to me.

Only purebred. And only from someone I know personally.

Yes I would. All three of them if I had the room in my house. It's not the breed you need to worry about. It's how they are raised. The shelter evaluates them very closely before putting them up for adoption.
