They came to visit and assumed they would stay at our house. Wrong. And now I’m the evil wicked witch . Smh

That was foolish of them to assume that you did have space. Are they terribly picky about where they sleep? An air mattress in the living room isn't an option?

If you have the room and were expecting them why would you not have them stay with you?

This is odd behavior to me, even if you have to juggle kids a little bit.

Not DH's dad knows we do not have room unless he sleeps in a recliner in the living room,  DH is not physically capable of giving up his bed.  FIL knows this in advance.

Yup if this wasn't clear to start with then you are adding expense when they have already spent money to come to visit you.  Not nice.
